And I'm getting a visceral sense of deja vu, like I’ve been here before many times...
10 years ago, I started posting "cringe" videos on my socials before'personal branding' became a thing.
I had a deep feeling that in an online-first culture, your social profile would be the first place potential employers, clients or partners would go to decide if they wanted to work with, hire or date you.
Then, when I turned down multiple Big 4 graduate offers to work at a "border-line illegal" start-up called Uber.
I had an unshakeable feeling that future careers would go to those who embraced new technology, could collaborate in fast-paced teams, and solve complex real-world problems.
And then 5 years later, when I could sense that our workforce, like many other high-growth tech start-ups, was becoming "bloated" or oversized, I knew it was only a matter of time until...
Many of former colleagues were impacted by this after I'd left
So, to insulate against it, I started freelance work on the side to learn how to work for myself in a future where job security was no longer guaranteed (no matter who you were).
And now I’m seeingfeeling a similar wave again 🌊
In the last 6-12 months, I've been proactively auditing my skills and services.
And if I'm brutally honest with myself, some of them are now, or nearly, obsolete.
The way I see it is.
You won't be replaced (directly) by AI.
But you'll be replaced by those who know how to use it.
I don't mean this to be a doomsday rant.
I've just felt compelled to share this for a long time, and wanted to say it like it is.
Because good news is - you're not behind (yet!).
The majority of the population still hasn't used ChatGPT (or any other AI tool)
So Reader - if you're ready to embrace the direction of the future, and don't want to get stuck in the past.
Start small.
Access any AI tool.
Prompt or create something with it.
And then play with it like the first time you used the internet in the 1990s/2000s.
Or social media apps in the 2010s.
Heck, here's an image prompt I tried the other day.
I gave it a reference image of our cat Leo.
And here's what it snapped back at me
In 7 seconds, the image on the right was generated 🤯
In five years, the people who win will not be the ones who waited to become experts in AI.
They'll be the ones who decided to start.
As always, I hope these words serve you today.
Mamba
